The Source celebrates Biggie and Barack for the Holidays!

What's up Fam,

Back in 1992 when a relatively unknown Brooklyn rapper by the name of Biggie Smalls sent us his demo tape, we thought he was so dope we had to let him shine in our Unsigned Hype section. But no one would have guessed that he'd be one of the few to really change the face of the Hip−Hop game. Although his time on the scene was cut way too soon, his presence was definitely felt−Biggie nabbed six Source covers to date with only two albums during his life as an artist−and his iconic status can never be replaced or recreated.

Which is why he was so deserving of our December/January cover! We are excited to welcome back the spirit of Brooklyn and the Notorious B.I.G. into our pages. In this issue, we celebrate his life and music through the eyes of Notorious Director George Tillman, Biggie's former manager Wayne Barrow and of course, through the heart and memories of his biggest supporter, his mother Voletta Wallace. We also help you select the ultimate gifts for your friends and fam in our extensive Holiday Buying Guide. We salute industry veterans Zomba President of Black Music, Mark Pitts, and our fallen comrade Def Jam Executive Vice President Shakir "Shake" Stewart. We even talk Hiv/Aids and get real about the epidemic with four activists that are heavily on the scene−eager to make you aware of the current statistics and how you can better arm yourself against the disease. And last, but certainly not least, we welcome President−Elect Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States, and the first Hip−Hop President to rock the vote.

This issue is tight! A classic...You better cop it while its out....'cause this one is definitely unbelievable.

BEYONCE STILL ON TOP OF HER GAME

Beyonce had 482,000 more reasons to be thankful this Thanksgiving. Her third solo album, "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," debuted at No. 1 on the pop album chart after selling 482,000 copies. It's the third straight No. 1 debut for the singer.

Beyonce's 2003 solo debut, "Dangerously in Love," started with 317,000, while 2006's "B-Day" moved 541,000.

THE TRUTH BEHIND THOSE JAY Z/RIHANNA RUMORS

Jonathan Hay reportedly writes in his upcoming book, Publicity Stunt: The Art of Noise, how he was behind the rumors of an affair between Rihanna and Jay-Z. In an interview with Joe Klein posted on Associated Content, he tells how he was hired by Vada Nobles, who produced Rihanna’s first single, “Pon De Replay,” to generate publicity for the then-unknown Barbadian singer.

“I then began to fabricate stories of Rihanna and Jay-Z, leaking false rumors to tabloids, working internet message boards, etc. We started to get an insane amount of media coverage very fast. There are so many things we did that people don't even know about, not even Rihanna herself. She was completely unknown and I was paid by Vada Nobles to generate publicity. The mega Island Def Jam deal rumor, we fluffed and fabricated. Rihanna and Vada had no idea what I was doing behind the scenes, but my whole agenda was to get media for the song…

I mean leaking out sensational stories and spreading them around in the news -- to tabloids such as the National Enquirer, music and gossip sites and whatnot. Like when the rumor surfaced that Jay-Z had a new love life and was cheating on Beyonce...that was just to get attention. Rihanna had nothing to do with ANY of that, nor did she know what we were doing. I was just trying to break the single and stay employed by Vada Nobles. Even Vada didn't know half the stuff I was doing. I kept my strategy a secret at the time because, honestly, everyone would have been against it, the tactics that I used. But I was only thinking about the end result - and look what happened...gossip sells.

I feel awful but, yes, I leaked some of those stories. Looking back, I am ashamed of that; there was zero integrity in that maneuver. But this is entertainment and I wanted to obtain publicity - so I came up with some crazy stories and it worked. Rihanna is one of the biggest stars in the world now, and look at how she stormed into the business! Not to take anything from her - she is a great artist - but every artist needs a launching pad and there is nothing better than a good scandal to get the public's attention.”

Casting Director Tips

- If you have an audition for a Casting Director, director or producer, always be prepared. Get the material (we call it "sides") in advance and practice before your audition. - Know what the project you are auditioning for is about. Are you reading for a comedy? a drama? What is the style of the show or film or the play?

- Always bring your headshot and resume.

- Don't use a lot of props. They get in the way of the really important thing - your audition.

- Dress appropriately but do not wear too much of a "costume". If you are reading for a homeless person, you don't need to come to the audition in ratty clothes and smelling badly. Conversely, if you are reading for a role as a business woman, you don't want to come in dressed in an evening gown.

- If you are keeping the script in your hands (check with the Casting Director to confirm that is ok), make sure you only use it as a reference. You want to make sure the Casting Director can see your face and hear your words.

- Don't wear heavy cologne or perfume. You may think it smells great, but often times actors overpower the Casting Directors with their scents.

- Try to relax and be friendly. Casting Directors know it's a stressful experience, and usually they will try and make you feel more comfortable. But make sure you take a deep breath (before you get into the audition room) and try and shake out the nerves.

- If you have long hair, make sure it's back off your face, so that we can see your acting.

- Be prompt. If you are supposed to be at the audition at a certain time, then be there. If you get held up - try to call and let someone know that you are running late.

- If you are reading with a Casting Director or a reader, make eye contact with that Casting Director. Don't play the scene to an imaginary actor. If your audition is being taped, then ask the Casting Director if you should play it directly to the camera or to the person reading with you.

Applying for Your Casting Call

When you decide to apply for a casting call, keep in mind there is a basic application process you should follow. When you mail in your application, just include a cover letter, resume and a head shot. Put your name on the head shot so the director doesn’t have to flip through all the pages to find your name. It helps him remember your name so if you stick into his mind for a part, he can recall it easier. Keep your cover letter brief. They don’t want to read a whole life story about you. Keep your resume professional as well. A sloppy resume never gets anyone a job.

Lil Wayne Scams! Refunds Issued!

Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo announced today that Lil Wayne fans will receive full refunds for tickets purchased for the October 26 concert at Rochester Blue Cross Arena and the rescheduled date of December 6. The December 6 show has been cancelled due to schedule conflicts with Lil Wayne's "I Am Music" tour, and was to include T.I., but now T.I. has an appearance on Saturday Night Live. T.I. ticket holder may see him in concert on December 13 without Lil Wayne. The Lil Wayne concert will take place after his tour, with all new tickets. Due to fraud, Cuomo wants all ticket holders to turn in their tickets by December 10 or contact Ticketmaster. On another note in Colorado, fake tickets were sold to see Lil Wayne in concert at The Pallidium. The manager of the venue said Lil Wayne was not booked at his spot, nor were tickets sold. He suggests ticket buyers to contact the original source of where they purchased tickets. The Sheriff's Dept is deciding rather to launch an investigation on the person or persons who sold fraudulent tickets.

ON TV THIS WEEK

Grammys and oo-la-la wear are among the TV highlights this week.

The Grammy nominees will be announced in a CBS special at 9 p.m. Wednesday. B.B. King, Celine Dion, John Mayer and Taylor Swift are scheduled to perform.

They are the warm-up for "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" at 10 p.m. Wednesday on CBS. Heidi Klum, Selita Ebanks and Adriana Lima are among the models. Usher sings. But another draw will be the backdrop: the lavishly restored Fontainebleau Miami Beach. How much screen time will that fabled hotel get?

Fox unveils "Secret Millionaire" with two hours at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The setup: The affluent live secretly among the less fortunate before providing surprise help. That help is at least $100,000 of the millionaire's own money. Does it sound like a show for our time?

And there are a lot of new episodes this week -- the week after the all-important November ratings period ended.

Highlights? ABC offers a new "Boston Legal" at 10 p.m. Monday. That Emmy-laden drama will end its run Dec. 8.

CBS' popular Tuesday lineup won't face competition from "Dancing With the Stars." It's the perfect time to take a look at "The Mentalist," the season's biggest new hit. It airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday -- opposite Fox's "Fringe," the season's other new hit.

CBS' "Survivor: Gabon" ejects another player at 8 p.m. Thursday. And hasn't this been an excellent season?

There's also a new "CSI" at 9 p.m. Thursday -- it stands a good chance of being the week's most-watched program. I haven't seen that episode, but here's an alert: You do not want to miss the Dec. 11 episode that introduces Laurence Fishburne. It's stunning. Brace yourself for a shocking performance by Bill Irwin as a serial killer. The photography has a mesmerizing look. Here's a show that's nine years into its run, and it's still grade-A TV.

SHAWTY LO/T.I. BEEF TAKES A VIOLENT TURN

Things took a turn for the worse at Radio One’s fourth annual Dirty Awards last night and Bossip was there to witness all of the foolishness.

The beef between Shawty Lo and T.I. seemed far from dead. Shawty Lo performed a few randoms before he and his crew (of about 10) broke into an impromptu diss version of Grand Hustle artist Yung LA’s song “Ain’t I.”

As Lo performed his version with a chorus “Don’t I,” an audience member identified by an eyewitness as Capitol recording artist Alfamega, allegedly threw a chair onto the stage. At that point, Yung LA and Big Kuntry rushed the stage and started throwing blows. Authorities broke the fight up rather quickly and escorted everyone off of the stage. Big Kuntry was later seen in the back of a Clayton County squad car on his cell phone. Most likely setting up his bail money for the night.

T.I. took the stage shortly after the fight to accept the humanitarian of the year award and addressed Shawty Lo’s antics in his speech. A private conversation took place between T.I. and Shawty-Lo, where T.I. tried to dead the beef once again.

Shortly thereafter, however, a second fight broke out as T.I. performed his verse from “Ain’t I,” allegedly substituting some lyrics with verbal jabs at Shawty Lo, with whom he has had an unpleasant relationship throughout the year.

Towards the end of the performance, another member of the Grand Hustle camp allegedly jumped off stage and assaulted a man witnesses said was Shawty Lo’s brother.

Police officers then halted the awards show, using pepper spray to end the fight. While the Dirty Awards audience was immediately evacuated, witnesses say other altercations may have occurred outside of the event.

Headshot Do's and Don'ts

Your headshot is your most important selling tool. As such, it needs to stand out for all the right reasons and none of the wrong ones. The purpose of a headshot is to showcase that special quality that makes you unique in a natural and straight-forward way. For a perfect headshot, follow these headshot tips:

DO make sure your headshot looks like you! If the casting director can't recognize your picture, he might not remember your audition.

DO show your age. A casting director will not be pleased when a 35-year-old shows up if he's expecting someone in their mid-twenties. And if that doesn't convince you, imagine all the juicy roles you're absolutely perfect for as you are. Now imagine your youthful headshot being tossed aside.

DO hire a professional headshot photographer. The advice and trained eye of a pro during the shoot is invaluable.

DO strive to look natural. Come with your hair styled the way you normally wear it for auditions and with very light makeup. Ask if there will be a hair and makeup person available during the shoot.

DO update your headshot every five years or whenever you've undergone significant physical change, such as weight loss or gain.

DON'T try to hide freckles, moles, or wrinkles under heavy makeup or through awkward poses. This will come across badly on camera and isn't a true representation of who you are.

DON'T act in your headshot or pose stiffly and artificially. Ideally, you want your headshots to emphasize both your uniqueness and your versatility. Be careful not to lock yourself into a specific role. Headshots should capture your true personality and type in a naturally compelling way.

DON'T try to show off the most glamorous version of you. Casting directors want to know what you'll look like when you walk into the audition, not how fabulous you can be with the right clothes and makeup.

DON'T wear clothes that distract from your face. Leave the loud patterns and stripes at home. Opt instead for very dark or very light clothing with clean neck lines.

Hollywood Audition Tips

Are you looking to become a successful Hollywood actor or actress? If you are, the process all gets started with an audition. An audition is where you are able to land a job or walk away empty handed. To ensure you don’t walk away disappointed, please continue reading on.

As previously stated, the audition process is the first step in landing a Hollywood acting job. However, the process does not start at the audition itself. You need to practice and prepare for your audition at home. This is important for newcomers, as you may be nervous and rightfully so, but never let that nervousness show. Practice your monologue or reading lines as much as possible. Do so alone in front of your mirror, as well as with someone you know and trust. It is preferable if that individual is one who is comfortable providing you with positive and negative feedback.

In addition to practicing for an audition, it is also important to perfect your appearance. Makeup can help to improve your appearance, but it should be tasteful and not overdone. If you will be doing your own makeup, as opposed to hiring a professional, practice at home. Next, try on clothes. When auditioning, there are many who want to be comfortable. Yes, this is good, but never walk into an audition wearing your comfort clothes, especially if they consist of an old pair of jeans, shorts, or sweatpants. An audition is just like a traditional job interview, one that you should come to dressed professionally.

Whether you attend a scheduled audition or an open casting call, you will not be alone. The waiting room will be filled with other hopeful, aspiring actors. If you have a scheduled audition, you shouldn’t have to wait too long. However, if you do, do not let the wait get you down. No matter how nervous or frustrating it can be, you need to walk into the audition room with a smile on your face. It doesn’t matter whether that smile is real or fake, but it needs to be there. The initial walk in is your first chance to make a good, pleasant impression.

As previously stated, you may have to wait a short period of time for your turn at a scheduled audition or casting call. Although a wait can be distracting, show up early. You should never show up late, especially for a scheduled meeting. If you do, you may lose your time slot. For open casting calls, you could be one of thousands that show up, so be sure to arrive early. Sometimes, the casting crew doesn’t even make it through the whole line.

If you are a beginner, never state so. Chances are the casting crew already has your resume. Never, outright state that you are new to acting, that it is your first audition, or that you hadn’t had the chance to practice your lines. You might assume this gives you an advantage if you deliver the best lines ever, but even still it can hurt you.

Speaking of beginners, if you are new to auditioning for acting roles, you will likely make a mistake. After all, seasoned actors and actresses make mistakes on screen. So, it is not unexpected for you to have one. Never highlight your mistake or ask for a chance to correct it. If you slipup on your lines, continue on. The ability to recover from a mistake is just as important as delivering perfect lines.

The above mentioned tips are just a few of the many that can prepare you for a Hollywood audition, but they are the easiest to implement. Most importantly, always be prepared. Never walk into an audition not knowing material that was provided to you or what you are auditioning for. Also, remember that an audition process is just like a traditional job interview, just with a lot more speaking involved.

TIPS FROM PROFESSIONALS: A simple makeover can open up a world of opporunity

Casting Director Renee Godbout on how a simple makeover can open up a world of opporunity
By Renee Godbout for InstantCast.com

Are you ready to make a serious career comeback? Well, a successful comeback is all about change.

If you’re in a rut and are having problems getting noticed, it’s time for you to make a drastic change. All you need to change the minds and attitudes of producers and yourself!

Be prepared to market yourself in different ways and be open to the new roles you will be auditioning for. Look at yourself in a different way and keep your confidence up. You may find a niche you never knew you fit into!

Check out these ways to change up your look and start the next phase of your career!

If you’re overweight, then dedicate yourself to losing those extra pounds. A whole new set of roles will open up to you. Just ask Valerie Bertinelli, who, after having a quiet 5 years, is guest starring on Boston Legal and getting ready to star in her own comedy pilot for TBS.

Pretend it’s makeover day on America's Next Top Model and get a completely new haircut or color. I worked with a male actor once from Hawaii who had long hair and lots of tattoos. He was often cast as the bad boy prisoner type, but after cutting off his hair and putting on a suit, I started casting him as a businessman and finding more roles he could fit into. I also had a female actor who was stuck playing “edgy” roles. Her look wasn’t very versatile until she ditched her bleached blonde hair and went more natural.

Men, it’s all about your facial hair. If you’ve had a beard for a while, it’s time to remember what you looked like clean-shaven. But if you’re always being looked at as a teenager and passed over for more adult roles, a little scruff may be exactly what you are looking for.

Learn a new skill. If you’re sick of seeing casting notices for principle ballroom dancers, go take classes and learn! It’s never too late to learn a new skill. Have you ever noticed how popular the show Dancing with the Stars is? These celebrities are learning new skills while at the same time making a big comeback.

With every new look, you also need a new headshot and resume. So be sure you’re making the right changes and that you’re prepared to spend some money to showcase your new look. If you have an agent or manager, make sure you sit down and discuss everything with them first. But if you’re really ready to make a change, just go for it and don’t be afraid to show off your new self!

FOR YOUR MAN: A man’s guide to buying lingerie

By Meenakshi Shankar

Men find lingerie confusing. They may juggle the numbers at their work stations, but the sizes of bras leave them in a state of mindless mayhem. Ask the men, who’re out there buying lingerie for women and they’ll confess, lingerie can be complicated. They don’t know if women prefer polka dots over sexy ribbons on their bras. Do I reach out for a sheer transparent bra or should I reach out for a satiny polka dotted red color bra? And asking for help comes after they have spent close to half a day in the shop. When it comes to buying lingerie all by himself, every guy gets cold feet.

So we came up with a simple guide that would help you work your way into your lady love’s underwear! Where you buy your lingerie is the least of your problem. Working up the nerve to enter a lace and frill filled boutique is the first hurdle.

It’s not just about the size and color! You need to think about her clothing preference too.

Ask her what she likes or notice what kind of lingerie she wears normally. Some women do not like thongs, and will not wear them. Other women find see through lingerie or mesh lingerie trashy. Some women will find garter belts very sexy, while others will see them as slutty and wonder what kind of woman you want to sleep with. I recommend - a peep into her closet to see what she wears.

Does she wear tight jeans with a tight t-shirt or tank top? If so, she may like a lingerie item that is a little tighter, that shows some skin. If the clothes in her closet are looser and don’t show much skin, she’ll probably want something a little modest.

And if you are still not certain, then stick to the baby doll, camisole with matching panties, or a slip may be your best bet. Look for items make from silk and satin that flow away from the body with minimal embellishment.

Guys, you do often have the tendency to think of your women one size bigger than she really is. There is nothing worse than gifting her lingerie one size bigger than her actual size. Gifting one size smaller is not good either. This is why getting the right size lingerie is very important.

The thumb rule of gifting your ladylove lingerie is getting the size right.

Material: Being a guy, with the gorgeous models sporting each negligee chances are you would like to buy them all! Stick to satin and silk; both these materials scream sensuousness.

Choose her favorite color. Your DNA make up may stir a hornet's nest when you see her in a polka dotted red underwear, but she may not be a 'red' kinda gal. She may prefer a baby pink...but if you are unsure, then stick to the basic black. You cannot go wrong in there!

Educate yourself before you go lingerie shopping. You really wouldn’t want to go into a boutique and be surrounded by baby dolls and garter belts and look like you are in No Man’s land. Look up online or read articles about the kinds of lingerie so you don’t feel overwhelmed when you actually shopping.

The beauty of gifting lingerie is that it lingers on because along with the dollop of love, it packages erotic memories. And from a woman’s point of view, it makes the gift extra special because of the amount of forethought that has gone into buying the gift.

How do we protect models?

Models are, unfortunately, highly vulnerable to con and scam artists. The Vixen Directory takes particular pride in trying to prevent that.

The Vixen Directory will do its best to check out all casting calls before we publish them. We never simply publish a casting notice as submitted. We ask questions, check references, and refuse to publish calls that seem less than reputable.

For instance, we ask companies to indicate if roles are paid or not; if any roles require nudity; are they seeking union or nonunion actors (and if it's union, under which contract); and so forth. We refuse to publish casting calls for pornography(we define pornography as work requiring sexual acts not simply nude or topless work), or for projects that require exorbitant fees or purchases. (If modest fees are required, we'll include exactly what's expected in the casting notice.)

However, we're not perfect. Despite our best efforts, con artists and creeps occasionally fool us. But we take your complaints seriously. If someone is proven to be a scammer or deliberately misleading in their ads, we never allow that person to advertise with us again. Ever. That's a promise. In extreme cases, The Vixen Directory will also notify authorities. The Vixen Directory will supply the most complete information possible about a project, so you know exactly what to expect at an audition before you attend. Then, if you are told something completely different, contact us immediately at vixensonline@gmail.com and we'll investigate. The Vixen Directory is working hard to be an urban model’s most trusted daily resource.
